“A 17-year-old Cypriot landed himself in hot water on Wednesday after trying to buy sexual services from a prostitute with two counterfeit 20 Cyprus pound notes (about R160) he designed on his home computer, police said. The illicit transaction failed when the eagle-eyed prostitute became suspicious about the currency offered to her. ‘The prostitute realised the money was fake and called the police, who arrived at the scene in Nicosia and called the 17-year-old in for questioning,’ said a police statement. During questioning, the resourceful teenager made a voluntary statement admitting that he forged the notes on his home computer with the aim of buying sex with a prostitute.” — Independent Online (South Africa)

Sexually speaking, a seventeen-year-old boy is like a boiling kettle with the lid on. Turbulent urges antagonize him from within, and yet he may not have sufficient opportunity to let off the steam, so to speak. Which is why it’s no surprise that this desperate Cypriot kid hit on this scheme to make fake money in order to buy sex. He probably figured that, at best, he’d get away with it, or at worst, the prostitute would not bother turning him in to the police. (It’s worth noting that “voluntary” prostitution is not illegal in Cyprus — meaning you can legally choose to prostitute yourself, though conversely a pimp can be arrested for trafficking — so the girl herself had nothing to fear by contacting law enforcement.)

Apparently the unlucky kid ran into a hooker who knows the value of a dollar, since she did in fact call the cops on him. On one hand, it seems like a draconian thing to do to a kid. Another girl might have just laughed at him and shrugged it off. On the other hand, though, who knows better than a prostitute the value of a dollar? When you’re selling your private parts, you acquire an intimate understanding of the worth of a dollar (or a Cypriot pound or whatever). Probably she was very indignant that this kid would try to undermine the economic system which she exploits herself to engage in. It can be degrading enough to sell your body. No doubt it would be even more degrading to be cheated out of it.
