“Not actually fit for our age” — the writer seems to mean that the class was too advanced for the age that he and his schoolmates were at. But it’s hard not to take the words in their other sense — as though the “sex education” he and his classmates received weren’t fit for modern life. The writer himself mentions that, in an age of satellite television and internet communication, the type of sex education he received was just not adequate. He advocates in his article for clearer, more direct sex education — probably a bold position in his conservative country.

But who could blame him? If your teacher is too scared to come in on sex-ed day, it’s no wonder you end up thinking sexuality is a “pool filled with water to wash human souls…” Uh, what? Maybe it’s the writer’s poor English, maybe it’s the cultural barrier, but it’s hard to figure out how sex is a purifying pool — or how that could be meaningful description of sex to adolescents. Gosh, no wonder all those terrorists rush to blow themselves up when they find out they’ll have seventy-two virgins waiting for them in paradise.
