Teen Sold to Her Rapist
“A 13-year-old Turkish girl was married off by her family to her rapist who paid them ‘the price of a truck’ to escape a long jail sentence… The girl, from the village of Damlibogaz, in western Turkey, was 10 years old when a family friend, aged 20, started sleeping with her. The rapes continued for a year before she fell pregnant and gave birth to a girl. Her rapist, Ferit Cicek, was sentenced to 18 years in jail. His family then promised the girl’s family 10 billion Turkish pounds ($9600) for an arranged marriage which would allow the young man to walk free. This story throws some cultural differences into sharp contrast. In Turkey, a man marries off his daughter for the price of a truck. “I’ve got to think of myself,” the father told a newspaper. Here in America, where weddings tend to be very expensive, it’s the opposite: a man has to pay the price of a new truck to marry off his daughter.
In Turkey, the rapist receives a reduced sentence when he agrees to marry his victim. Here in America, it would be the victim who would have to agree — and no doubt she never would.
Can you imagine, though, if America had a law like this Turkish one that obliges rapists to “do right” by their victims? Jesus, every red-blooded male in the country would be trying to rape Nicole Kidman or Britney Spears or fill-in-your-favorite-hottie here. If any of them complained to police, the rapist would just nobly offer to rectify the situation by marrying her. “I’ll make a lady out of her, and meanwhile I’ll enjoy her beauty, fame, money…” What a law it would be that privileges scumbags over supermodels. It might take a little of the shine off that American obsession with celebrity.
Actually, that is a common thing in the Bible. I forget which passage, and I left my copy of _The_X-Rated_Bible_ back home, but its in the Old Testament somewhere.
Yes, you could offer to marry the girl in the old testament. This happened many times, though I remember once instance where the christians did it, and then killed the rapist anyway… and the rapist’s entire clan… and then I think they raped THEIR women.
It’s been a while since I read it though.
Just because the practice was done in the bible doesn’t mean that we should continue doing it. We have evolved. This is horrible.
