“A Harare primary school teacher has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing into allegations that she gave her pupils the choice of suckling her breasts or being caned. The matter came to light after one of the Grade Three pupils reported the alleged abuse to his parents. One parent said his son told him that he was asked to choose between suckling the teacher’s breasts or receiving 100 strokes for allegedly making noise. In the news you read of a lot of stories about teachers abusing their students. The prototype is the older male teacher and the impressionable young female who succumbs to his mature allure. Usually these stories feature reaction quotes from shocked members of the outraged community. “Mr Jones was such a wonderful teacher, I never imagined he’d do something like this.”

What these stories fail to take into account is the enormous amount of pent-up admiration concealed in the ardent bosoms of adolescent students. Face it: students develop crushes on their teachers. This does not make it right for the teachers to succumb to temptation, but it does help to explain just what makes it so tempting. It’s lovely to be loved — or if you can’t call it love exactly, it certain is titillating to be so admired.

Which brings us to this strange story of the suckling teacher. Obviously this story does not fit the prototype of teacher/student abuse, and in a way you have to wonder if it’s even sexual. It might have been — after all, it can’t feel bad to have a bunch of kids sucking your nipples — but at the same time it may have been some distorted maternal or nurturing impulse that caused the woman to oblige her students to suck her breasts.

On the other hand, if you look back at your own youth, you can imagine wishing this would have happened with some teachers. There was Mrs S. in second grade, an attractive young lady with an ample bosom. Even at the age of seven, you would have gladly latched onto those papes… But then again, odds are that any teacher who’s a babe probably isn’t hankering to give suck to her students. The teachers with repressed desires to breast-feed are probably not supermodels. And this disparity raises an interesting point: is it a kind of rape if the teacher is ugly, but is it not rape if she was beautiful?
