“An urgent inquiry was launched in Cyprus last night after an undercover police operation exposed a group of up to 100 tourists, including Britons, taking part in what was described a mass orgy aboard a cruise ship off the island. The scenes, shown on local TV and described as ‘debauched’, were broadcast after being caught on camera in the police sting. Arrests are expected in the coming days. ‘These scenes are not just graphic, they go beyond every conceivable limit,’ the island’s deputy chief of police, Sotiris Haralambous, said. ‘We are talking about 50, 100 people involved in acts of total debauchery. It’s hard to even describe.’ The still pictures, leaked to the privately owned Mega TV channel and broadcast in suitably edited form, show the ferrygoers during the night cruise in international waters off the island. It’s hard to see why Cyprus is making such a big stink about this floating orgy. The boat was in international — not Cypriot — waters during the time of the alleged group grope, so technically speaking Cyprus doesn’t even have the authority to pursue any legal actions. What’s more, it’s both short-sighted and narrow-minded to get so hung up about people fucking a hundred miles off your shores. How does it tarnish the “good image of Cyprus,” as the island’s minister of tourism claims? (Gosh, do they censor Moby Dick there because it has an obscenity in the title?)

In this day and age, most sexual tourism involves bourgeois Germans trolling for little girls in places such as Thailand and the Ukraine, so at least this here Love Boat can pride itself on keeping out of those murky waters. No one is saying any minors were involved. And for that matter, isn’t the prospect of aquatic orgies likely to attract more, not less, tourists? The trip was (publicly) billed as a “£30 night cruise with meal” — and it goes without saying that a lot of tourists would find that to be a pretty very attractive price for such a good time, even if the food is bad.
