“A rural Wilton [Iowa] man’s Web site depicting a fantasy bed-and-breakfast that caters to fetishes has cranked up local rumor mills, generated complaints to police and attracted hits from around the world. Online since September 2003, the site for the Country Fetish Farm, Bed & Breakfast and Fetish Retreat states that it offers a ’safe, warm, and friendly environment for your fetish enjoyment…’ The site’s home page says it caters to ‘most fetishes with the exception of extremely dangerous and vulgar fetishes,’ and includes interests such as ‘cross-dressing, bondage, domination, enemas and spanking.’ It does not include animals, torture, children or sexual play. William Hasemann, the Web site’s creator, said the site is actually ‘a cyber-world fantasy, not a bed and breakfast. A lot of people have fantasies. I started playing with (creating a Web site) and thought it looked neat,’ he said. ‘It was my brain child. My wife got a giggle out of it.’ Hasemann, 49, who said he’s retired from military service, does not invite people to his home to practice their fetishes, although he and his wife, ‘Mistress Tina,’ had considered it. ‘We live quite way back off the road,’ he said. ‘If some man wanted to run around in a tutu out here, nobody would see him or care.’” — MuscatineJournal.com (US)

Unfortunately, Mr. Hasemann — the site creator — has suffered the perils of the old proverb, Be careful what you ask for because you might get it. He made a fun site, received some attention — too much attention — and then better judgement got a hold of him. (He is a grandfather, after all!) He was bothered by a local school linking to his site, and now the Country Fetish Farm site is only available to those who email Mr. Hasemann and specifically request access.

All that being said, it’s also too bad that Mr. Hasemann’s site is “just a fantasy.” When you think about it, a fetish bed-and-breakfast is really a great entrepreneurial idea. Too often people lambast metropolises such as New York, Paris, and Amsterdam for their decadence, when really these cities may well be less decadent than the countryside precisely because the concentration of people in an urban area serves as a kind of mutual surveillance. It’s hard to find the space to be weird in a city, which is why furtive bodies populate the bushes of local parks at nightfall. (Here in New York, we also have former Mayor Giuliani to thank for decreasing the local decadence. It’s easier to buy a gun here than it is to get a lapdance.) The really fun and creepy stuff tends to happen out in the country, away from prying eyes. The Marquis de Sade, the authority in all matters sexually deviant, always staged his orgies at lonesome castles or monasteries, cut off and isolated from the world. No doubt he would have appreciated the libidinal lebensraum offered by an out-of-the-way fetish farm. You can imagine him being quite comfortable at Ye Olde Sodom Inn…
