Rapist at the Ready
“Schoolgirls, the youngest one just 10, have told the Pretoria High Court how a balding man with a few missing teeth stopped to pick them up for sex when they were on their way to school. Joao de Canha, who is facing 48 charges, mostly of abduction and rape, admitted an insatiable sex drive, and that he looked for sex with prostitutes and schoolchildren. ‘I am a person who likes girls. It is for this reason that I carry (sex aids) with me. I never know when I will come across a girl or a prostitute,’ he told Judge Hekkie Daniels in the Pretoria High Court on Tuesday. In most of the cases the child witnesses said De Canha forced them into his car at gunpoint. Child-locks were activated and they could not escape, they said. They said they were driven to a remote spot and raped. At least three of the girls he allegedly raped in this manner told the court about how he applied the sex aids before the rape and in some instances girls said they were abducted and raped in pairs… ‘I don’t quite understand what happens in your head. You have a wife at home, probably available for sex, yet you look for the first child walking in the street and negotiate sex with her,’ Daniels said. This would be a pretty typical portrait of a guy who likes to rape schoolgirls except for one thing — the fact that he carried sex aids around with him. What kind of sex aids? Another story describes them as “rings and bands,” presumably cock rings. This in itself is revelatory: the sex aids were for the enhancement of the perp’s own pleasure. Naturally he wouldn’t consider lugging condoms around, since he probably figured he wouldn’t catch any diseases from virgin schoolgirls. (Also in the other story, he mentions how he knew his one victim was a virgin because he “could feel it” — though he insists she wasn’t raped but rather “fingered,” as though that makes it any less a crime.) So the immediate thing this little detail gives you is the portrait of a man out for his own pleasure. He wouldn’t bring a condom because it would never occur to him to worry about infecting or impregnanting his victim. It was his pleasure, not the consequences for her body, that was at stake.
The other thing this little detail tells you is that this was a guy who took a cue from the Cub Scout motto, “Be prepared.” He was ready for action. He might pass up on the first girl he met on the street, but not the second. (Prostitutes were presumably a last resort when schoolgirls were wanting.) Every day he must have gotten up, got dressed, checked his supply of cock rings, and headed out for adventure. What this makes plain is that he had a kind of constant intent to commit sex crimes. He blamed it on his “extraordinary” sex drive, and yet you have to wonder if it was really his sex drive that was excessive or his judgement that was lacking. After all, most guys ogle every girl they see on the street. They just don’t act on the impulses.
If you ask me, I think his judgement was lacking, more than his sex drive was extreme.
