Couple’s No-Sex Blunder

A couple who went to a fertility clinic after eight years of marriage to find out why they could not have kids were shocked to find out they needed to have sex. The German couple attended the University Clinic of Lubek and had a series of examinations, which showed they were both fertile, website News24.com reported. A clinic spokesman said: ‘When we asked them how often they had had sex, they looked blank, and said: ‘What do you mean?’. ‘We are not talking retarded people here, but a couple who were brought up in a religious environment who were simply unaware, after eight years of marriage, of the physical requirements necessary to procreate.’ The 30-year-old wife and her 36-year-old husband are now being given sex therapy lessons while the university clinic undertakes a study to try to find out if there are more couples with a similar lack of sex education. — The Sun (UK)

This is obviously difficult to believe. Even if you lived in a cave, deprived of all information about modern life, wouldn’t your basic biological urgings cause you to figure out sex? It’s no excuse that the couple in question was religious. On one hand, most religious liturgy contains at least a few examples of sexual behavior — creation myths and so on. The Old Testament in particular contains so much humping that it would be hard to believe any Jewish or Christian couple could be ignorant of sex. (Unfortunately, the article doesn’t mention what religion so blinded this couple to their biological needs.) On the other hand, most religions also spend ample time warning about the dangers of sex — and so for this reason alone you expect believers to be acquainted with at least the concept of sex.

The story does allow for one other explanation, which is that the couple were aware of sex but that they didn’t realize that it was necessary for procreation. In other words, perhaps they thought sex was just something people did for pleasure — perhaps they thought that all sex was fundamentally pornographic, and thus they were unaware that this nasty act was the obligatory prelude to having a beautiful little baby. It would be pretty easy to believe people could make this mistake, especially since the pornographic depiction of sex is far more prevalent in popular culture than the reproductive depiction. You can well imagine a different type of couple, one weened not on religion but on porn, that had no idea fucking was for anything but fun.

Believe it.

Years ago in one of Albert Ellis’s early books, Sex without Guilt, I think, he wrote about a childless couple who came to him for counseling.

Using anatomically correct dolls, Ellis discovered that they had been engaging in anal intercourse.

Believe it? Or not?

Better plan to revise this one — likely hoax.

So opines Urban Legends

sample from Catch 22

(In Joseph Heller’s novel Catch-22, Doc Daneeka reminisces to Yossarian about his days in private practice, and he talks about a couple who once came to him because they were unable to conceive a child. Despite the couple’s claims of regular sex, the doctor discovered upon examination that the wife was still a virgin. He used plastic models to demonstrate to the couple how to have sex the “correct” way, and a few days later the husband returned and punched him in the face.)

Frankly it would be a relief to know this story was a hoax, since it is depressing to think people could be so entirely ignorant of their own biology.

Another possible explanation for the couple’s ignorance of sex might be that they were both at least somewhat asexual. Since if they both had low to no libidos this could certainly explain why they never even “discovered” sex itself. There are many asexual people & it stands to reason that some of them (particularly those living in rural or isolated areas) might not even conceive (no pun intended) of the whole notion.

snopes.com debunked this story. http://www.snopes.com/pregnant/nosex.asp
Among other things, the Urband Legends Website couldn’t find anyone at the Lubeck clinc who had heard of this case.
