Well, what does it say about people that they abandon sex toys and old copies of the Bible in storage lockers? It’s easy to guess that people get bored of the sex toys or the old pornography, or maybe they grow older and lose interest in sex altogether. And maybe it’s the same for the Bibles — life roughs people up and they can no longer sustain belief in a God who would turn daily existence into such a grind…

There are people who make a religion out of sex and people who eroticize the sacraments — but sooner or later it all ends up in the dust bin, and if it’s not you who abandons it in a storage locker then it’s death that kidnaps you and leaves your heirs to sort it all out. In that sense there is always something very poignant about people’s junk — estate auctions, old trunks in the attic, heirlooms and hand-me-downs — it’s all the debris of bygone passions, and whether you worshipped God or you worshipped sex, it doesn’t much matter in the end. It all ends up on ebay anyway.
