Amish Girl Recounts Abuse
“With her starched white bonnet and long blue dress pressed in place, the teenager testifying yesterday was the picture of a proper Amish woman. What she described to a Superior Court of Justice jury seemed at odds with her appearance — horrible acts of sexual abuse and violence inflicted upon her within her closed community by her aunt. The 13-year-old recounted the horrors… Touching of her ‘private parts’ by her aunt, either with her hands or with a knife. Numerous beatings ‘all over the body.’ Attempted suffocation of the children with string around their necks or a plastic bag over their heads. Forcing them to eat manure, dead animals and ingesting urine, sometimes telling them it would hurt them and other times indicating ‘our parents eat things like that.’ One of the more bizarre circumstances the girl described took place, she said, in the aunt’s bedroom. She said when she was either naked or dressed, she would wear an artificial beard. The girl also recounted how her aunt would put insects into her and would tell her and other children to do it to her. ‘She’d say she was Satan or changed into a man,’ the girl said, and recalled her aunt also made up ‘a little song about Satan.’” — London Free Press (Canada)
Sounds basically like the aunt wigged out. You can’t help but wonder if extremely religious people are so out of touch with reality that it’s only too easy for their fanaticism to change allegiances. Satan can push God out of the aunt’s head because the only thing anchoring anything there is delusion. If you can worship God you can just as easily worship Satan — from the cognitive standpoint there’s not much difference. They’re both non-entities. And the only practical difference is that you leave off chastising your own flesh in order to put bugs in your niece’s vagina.
For an outsider — in this case, a non-Amish person — it’s always titillating when a member of a closed community comes out and spills the beans. You sympathize with the girl for the abuse she suffered, but you get off reading about the deviant doings that happen behind closed doors. You wish somebody would do a complete tell-all… Like, what goes on in those hay mows after a good old-fashioned barn-raising? Do Amish teens park in their buggies the same way other teens park in their cars? Inquiring minds want to know.

Indeed. If you can seriously, passionately believe in one imaginary being, as say, our latter day Canon Docre (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-4033180,00.html) probably did, you can easily believe and pledge to serve another (or even several!). It is these little scenarios that make me appreciate the usage of a lower case ’satanic’.
What I find really fascinating about both of these stories (and they may well both be just that) is that they both involve penetration of the vagina with unusual creatures. This isn’t you’re everyday dog-humping and horsewhacking bestiality, this is putting bugs and snakes in the vagina. I have to wonder if it’s for the subconscious horror/shock value of it. The use of bugs and snakes seems like a child’s nightmare. What would Freud say? The snake is associated with the Devil via the Bible (pretty obvious and naturally creepy symbol, actually), and insects are associated with plagues…

A large cockroach or a cicada would be truly disturbing. Or a young praying mantis. It would make an interesting painting.

For lots more of what Amish teens [sometimes] get up to, there is a nice documentary called Devil’s Playground which covers the live of several young amish during their teen years. As anabaptists, they must choose to enter the church, and there is a period, called rumspringa (“running around” I think), during which they are allowed to go out and see the larger world (which usually means buying a car and dating, drinking, engaging in sex, etc.). They get up to plenty, and apparently dealing (& doing) meth is fairly predominant now. So I wonder what kind of rumspringa experience the aunt in this story had. The decision to finally join the church isn’t easy for the kids in these communities, and for those that don’t there is the consequence of being cast out, shunned, by their family. Perhaps this woman should have stayed away from the church. But then, what she’s accused of doing is pretty severe. But I don’t know. Maybe in a less restrictive culture she would have only engaged in adultery or lesbianism. Seems like she went a bit overboard, and I think the lifestyle probably contributed to what she did.
