It’s a Dog’s Life

Alanr — who has been submitting so many links that he’s practically an unofficial PervScan research assistant (thank you!) — happened to send in a few stories over the last few weeks that really give new meaning to the old phrase “it’s a dog’s life.”

In the first story, an abused dog was left for dead on a road in New Hampshire. “The canine’s muzzle was locked shut with three plastic zip ties and another zip tie had been placed on the dog’s penis to prevent him from being able to urinate.” He was grossly underweight and on the verge of death by the time he was able to receive treatment from an animal shelter. A 23-year-old woman has since been charged with animal cruelty.

In the second story, a dog was left outside without proper shelter since he was ten weeks old. As a result, the dog (since named Charlie) “lost part of his tail and an ear to continued exposure to subzero temperatures, and he was slightly malnourished. But the more serious injury was to his penis, which had suffered frostbite and infection.” The veterinarians who were called in to care for him decided that the only way to save his life was to perform a “penile amputation.” In effect, the vets gave him a sex-change operation. “Through all of this, Charlie has just remained a sweetheart,” the veterinarian commented. “I just wish we could do to people what they sometimes do to animals.”

Wow. What can you say? It’s one thing to hunt animals, eat meat, wear fur, oblige animals to perform farm work. It’s another thing altogether to perform tricks from 120 Days of Sodom on them — and that’s pretty much what the twist-tie thing was. Sade writes a lot about forcing his young minions to refrain from going to the bathroom, except at the command of somebody who might want to drink or eat the waste. Certainly the divine marquis would have appreciated the idea of binding up a penis with a twist tie.

It all calls to mind a point that renegade psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich once made. In the past philosophers have sought to determine what separates man from animal — is it speech? Reason? Consciousness? None of these, wrote Reich in his book Character Analysis. What separates man from animal is sadism, “this specifically human drive.” Animals might tear each other to bits and eat each other, but they wouldn’t conceive of binding up each other’s excretory organs. Weirdly, it takes reason to conceive of that.

And in that light, consider a third story alanr sent in. In this one, a killer chopped off a man’s penis and fed it to his dog. “Detectives,” the story says, “admit they are baffled about a motive.” Aren’t we all?
