When you first read this article, you think “Yup, there’s modern times for you,” and you imagine all the marriages that must be ruined when a suspicious spouse decides to google his significant other.

But on reflection, doesn’t this story say less about the internet than about marriage — or at least about this particular marriage? The wife must obviously have been dissatisfied somehow. Maybe she was an insatiable slut, or maybe her husband was a frigid jerk who didn’t know or didn’t care to fulfill her needs. Either way, far from blaming the porn site, shouldn’t the husband take a good hard introspective look at himself and his marriage? It’s not the internet that ruins relationships, it’s relationships that ruin themselves.

Furthermore, what did police arrest the porn-site owner for anyway? He doesn’t seem to have been the wife’s lover. And though the story mentions that the porn-site was an online “club for exhibitionists,” it’s hard to see how that would be illegal in this day and age. If you arrested every person who posted a nude photo of himself on the internet, you’d need a prison the size of Australia. And if you arrested every site owner who facilitated such exhibitionism, you’d have to arrest the owners of Yahoo and Microsoft and a thousand other internet service providers.
