A lot of people find it difficult to maintain any religious faith in this day and age. Television, radio, internet — these sources of secular information and entertainment corrupt the inner eye and prevent it from seeing the light. But if a voice boomed out of a cloud in the sky and said, “Hey you — yes, you — you have a divine right to marry as many women (or girls, heh heh) as you want. In fact, you can even drive all the other guys out of town. Be the sultan of your own harem! God wills it.” If you heard a voice boom out of the sky and tell you that all that was your divine prerogative, you’d find religion quick, now wouldn’t you?

Somehow it seems that these cults always use polygamy as a way of siphoning underage girls to their leaders. The typical setup is that the cult leader has thirty or forty wives. Most of them — the adults — are probably “wives” in the worst sense, a spouse with the status of a domestic servant. But then a select few — teenagers — get to make like the Virgin Mary and sire a savior. Or rather, the resemblance to Mary only goes so far, since at least Mary got to keep her virginity.
