“Bestiality leads to the injuries of approximately 200 and 300 pets a year in Sweden, according to a report by Norway’s TV2. The estimate was presented by Svenska Veterinärforbundet, the Swedish veterinary organization, in an attempt to publicize the animals suffering. The organization claims the problem has increased during the last couple of years, even if most people are unaware of it. ‘We have seen an increase since 1999 when child pornography became illegal,’ Johan Beck-Friis told TV2. ‘It appears, in other words, as there are some people who have replaced children with animals. It is a commonplace that people often treat their pets as though they were children. Lonely old men or sterile wannabe matriarchs develop inordinate attachments to dogs, cats, and parakeets. They put designer pullovers on their poodles and feed pâté to their Persians. You see these individuals doting on their dachshunds and you think, “That’s a person who should’ve had kids. I wonder why they never had kids?”

Emotionally, people do tend to transfer their paternal and maternal feelings to mammals — but do they transfer their sexual feelings as well? Granting that bestiality can do more harm than good to the beasts involved — uh, duh — does it make any sense at all to see a correlation between the criminalization of pedophilia and the increase of pets injured by conjugal relations? It hardly seems likely that child molestors and kiddie-porn fiends, noting the criminalization of pedophilia in 1999, said to themselves, “Damn! No more Lolita action.” And casting a look around, their gaze fell on man’s best friend. “Hmm, now there’s an angle. Bestiality ain’t been illegal here in Sweden since 1944. Hey, Rover, c’mon over here and lemme see some tongue…” What pedophile would replace hairless young virgins with shaggy old mammals?

Really it seems more likely that the same reasons that caused Sweden finally to criminalize pedophilia have also resulted in a kind of outbreak of bestiality. Think about it. 1999 — height of the dot-com bubble. If veterinarians have seen an increase in animals injured by sexual behavior, might it not be because the proliferation of bestiality across the internet has encouraged more and more people to try it out?
