The mother told Van Pareen the children were forced to have oral sex with one another, their father and herself and to touch one another. The report says the father chased the children away ‘like dogs’ after they had sexually satisfied him. Van Pareen said the father shot the children’s little dog dead in front of them and threatened to do the same with them.” — News24.com (Africa)

People — or at least the kind of people fascinated by it — tend to romanticize perversion. Pedophilia is hot nympho lolitas, not the humiliation and degradation of innocent children. Incest is some sexy taboo-breaking affair between consenting siblings, not the systematic exploitation of people who ought to be able to trust you. And so on. Rather than sympathize with the misery of people who’ve been on the ugly receiving end of various perverse activities, you fantasize about the extreme daring fun to be had in exploring forbidden purviews of sexuality.

But then a story like this comes along and it’s a real wakeup call. Suddenly you taste the piss in the “golden” shower. (What a euphemism, when you think about it — transmuting excrement to gold!) It’s hard to keep up the fiction that perversion is titillating and fun when you read about a brute like this guy. Not only did he abuse these children sexually, he also beat them, starved them (once the mother had to cut up grass to find something to feed them), deprived them of education and God knows what else. The kids don’t even have the mental capacity of other kids their age, thanks to the abuse.

To be fair, you have to presume the father’s innocent until proven guilty. And yet if it does turn out that he’s guilty, what a micro-holocaust he’s committed. Even setting aside whatever he may have done to manipulate and abuse his wife, the guy has probably ruined the future lives of his own four kids — and then, the way these things go, these kids will probably have kids of their own and fuck them up too. The abused often become abusers and so it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle of horror and misery.
