At first sight, there is an obvious tactical lesson in this story: if you plan to threaten a figure of eminence, it’s a good idea to purge your apartment of any other incriminating items you might have lying around, including illicit drugs, counterfeit cash, homemade bombs, child pornography. After all, if you threaten to chase the president down with a stolen tank, you must realize you’re going to get a visit from the Secret Service, right? Why make more trouble for yourself?

On the other hand, it’s hard to believe that this guy — a former soldier who was honorably discharged after eight years in the service — wouldn’t realize this himself. Was he that stupid? The article says he didn’t just download kiddie porn — he printed it and then showed it to the very agents who searched his apartment. Can anyone be that dumb? That crazy? Or is he maybe being framed? You can well imagine, given both the proliferation of kiddie porn and the outrage emerging in reaction, that this would be a pretty good thing to plant on anyone suspected of hostile political views. Marijuana or cocaine used to be the things to plant on people to discredit them, but now a drug charge doesn’t mean much. Ask any celebrity. So what better way to slander somebody than to implicate them in child pornography?
