Espresso Sex

“Speed dating and espresso sex are among the words and phrases which entered the English language in the past year, according to a study published today. Others which have grown to become widely used are SARS, fat tax and portion distortion. They are among examples identified by The Collins Bank of English, a computer system which sifts through more than 150 million words a year to pick out emerging trends… Sex had a strong influence on new words and phrases, including ‘hasbian’ for a former lesbian who becomes heterosexual or bisexual, and ’sperm bandit’ for a woman who has intercourse solely in order to become pregnant.” — The Scotsman (UK)

Cynics like to say that there is nothing new under the sun, and yet one of the beauties of neologisms — newly invented words — is that they demonstrate how times really do change. Ok, “espresso sex” is just a new word for an old thing — a quickie, a one-night stand — but a term like “hasbian” really expresses something new. It’s not to say there has never before in history been a lesbian who “went straight,” but it is to say that there has never before been a culture that needed a term for lesbians who defect. “Hasbian” is a word that contains a truly novel social phenomenon in it: the political and social emergence of gays over the last three decades or so. Cynics might point out that homosexuality was accepted in ancient Greece, and yet that ancient tolerance was nothing like the politically organized and socially influential homosexuality of today. Also, it was a primarily male phenomenon, and so the Greeks would have had absolutely no use for a term or a concept such as “hasbian.” (Nor, incidentally, did they have any use for the term “homosexual,” which was itself a 19th century classification.)

All of which is to say that neologisms are both expressions of change and mirrors in which we can view the changes as they happen. Sometimes they may even run in advance of social changes proper, as in some of PervScan’s own neologisms. For example, in the book Extraterrestrial Sex Fetish, we proposed the term “exophilia” to denote a sexual fetish for alien beings. Or just the other day we proposed “pedo pal” and “molestor maven” as terms that, in the spirit of “fag hag,” could connote adult women who have an irrational fondness for pedophiles. And wouldn’t that be a nice way to describe all the supporters who’ve recently emerged for Michael Jackson? Molestor mavens, all of them.
