A little math can help to explain how truly astonishing an amount of porn this is. If you presume that each image was 100 kilobytes and each video was 1 megabyte — a very conservative estimate on both counts — you end up with about 55 gigabytes of pornography. Then if you figure that the perp was using a 56k modem, it would have taken about 114 days of constant downloading (at optimal rates) to archive all that material. Of course, when you figure that he did all his deviant downloading during his off hours, and if you presume he worked 40 hours a week and slept 8 hours a night, he must have spent about 20% of his free time since 1999 downloading kiddie porn.
Now to spend twenty percent of your free time downloading child pornography is a lot — and yet that doesn’t even take into account several additional factors. First, he must have downloaded tons of other pornography as well. (The article mentions 16,000 bestiality videos, for example.) Second, he must also have spent time organizing all the images, saving them to hard drives, burning them to disks. Third, any aficionado of online porn knows that you probably spend ten minutes sorting through junk for every one minute you spend downloading something titillating. And if that was the case here, the guy must have spent practically every spare minute glued to his computer.
All that being said, it is certainly hard to believe the perp’s claim that he wasn’t sexually aroused by the pictures. On the other hand, you do wonder if the downloading becomes an obsession itself, so that the urge is not just to find stimulation but to get every image, complete every series, archive everything. It’s kind of like a person who finishes all the food on his plate, even though he’s full. It’s not just a matter of satisfying a hunger but of finishing a job, so to speak. He’s not just a pervert, he’s a completist.

Now, I’m tired of the way pedophiliacs are portrayed in this (and many) types of media. They are portrayed as ‘evil’, ‘perverted’, ‘gross’. etc. Now, I’m not a pedophile, but I have a small theory about pedos. I think that they are merely stimulating their biological urges. The way their minds work, I think, work the same way as men’s minds do when they see a pair of breasts. They can’t help stop their urges. I think that they should be as accepted as other ‘perverted people’ are, such as homosexuals. I don’t think that all pedophiles are child molesters, but simply have the same urges that most men have, when they see a child. I think that they should just be left alone, except when they perputrate a sexual crime, such as non-consensual sex. I’m simply sick of they way these ‘perverts’ are given a bum’s rap and are hated just because of the way their minds work.

The problem is that pedophiles are automatically thought of as rapists….if they rape a child, then a crime has definitely been committed and something should be done….but if the child is willing and if real love is present in the relationship, then it’s a different matter. I would think it’s better for a child to have a loving sexual relationship with an adult than to be a homeless orphan with no one to love them at all. In many cases I think the sex between an adult and a minor is simply an extension of a “paternal” kind of love. I had a friend at school when I was younger who had a sexual relationship with his own father – yes it was homosexual, yes it was incestuous and yes, he was underage – but he loved it and admitted that he would often initiate the sexual contact – and he grew up to be one of the gentelest and most stable people I know. The crime is not in the sex – it’s in the lack of love. Psychological damage is not a result of sex – it’s the result of ABUSE! (Big difference) in much the same way that an adult female rape victim would be affected – that doesn’t make sex with a woman bad, it just makes FORCED sex bad. It is also true that the only “crimes” people hear about are the ones where children are raped and abuse – for of those cases a bet there are at least ten cases of concensual sex with minors that we never hear about. Why? Because the children don’t suffer at all – in fact they probably feel loved and wanted and grow up happier than a kid who isn’t loved at all.
In summary, I think parents/guardians who don’t show love and affection to the kids they look after are committing worse crimes than someone who shows true love for a minor in a sexual way (without force or abuse).
What damages these children the most is NOT the sexual acts that most of them are asked–NOT FORCED–to engage in. Far more damning is the reaction of our society when the deed is discovered. Far more destructive is the fear and secrecy the children and their “abusers” must endure. Far worse is the loss of a beloved partner, the grilling of prosecuters and counselors, and the doctors who try to assure you that it’s “NOT YOUR FAULT!” Damn it, sometimes it IS our fault! Sometimes we MEANT to have a relationship with an older lover! I, for one, will will go to my grave believing that I could have had a normal life if the “SOCIETY” we in America live in had just left us the HELL ALONE!
Instead, my strongest memories are of something I can never have again–and of a loved one who I will never see in this world.
