Dungeon Perv’s Pad Up for Sale

“The horror house of serial rapist John Jamelske, who kept girls locked up as sex slaves in his basement, is to be sold — with the proceeds going to his victims. Real-estate agents are asking $75,500 for the three-bedroom suburban Syracuse home where the monster kept five girls and women between 1988 and 2003 chained up in a concrete bunker he built in the back garden. Realtors said the home is on the market for about $7,000 less than its appraised value… The underground bunker was demolished after the monster was convicted in August.” — New York Post (US)

It used to be that any house with a disturbing past — the site of a murderous rampage, a homicidal freakout, or any other crime too awful to contemplate — would sell for less than market value. The only way to get prospective buyers to overcome their fear of ghosts or bad vibes or whatever would be to appeal to their wallet. Evidently the brokers handling this house are taking the same approach — and yet, in this day and age, when celebrities collect paintings by serial killers and morbid entrepreneurs hawk murder memorabilia on ebay, shouldn’t this house fetch more than market value? No doubt the police did the victims a tremendous disservice by destroying the actual bunker where the victims were sequestered and sodomized, since the presence of an authentic torture chamber would only have increased the bidding amongst buyers of the bizarre.
