jesus…this is bizarre and disturbing. and i’m surprised that this kind of thing hasn’t happened before (so yeah, perhaps we can expect more like this in the future); i’d have thought we’d heard all manner of weird net-personals-phycho-meetups by now, but there’s always something new just over the horizon i guess.

never heard of The Phantom Blooper, though this story did make think of the dinner scene at the end of Hannibal.

The Phantom Blooper is the follow-up to Gustav Hasford’s novel The Short-Timers, which is the book that Stanley Kubrick’s film Full Metal Jacket was based on. Short-Timers is the dark story of a soldier in Vietnam named Private Joker, and Phantom Blooper is the sequel, which follows Private Joker after he’s captured by the VC….

Although Hasford became very popular for a brief period following the success of Full Metal Jacket, he ended up having some personal problems (including alcoholism and a stint in jail for stealing library books) that derailed his promising career. He died alone on an island in Greece, where he’d gone to try to get his writing back on track.

PervScan is a big fan of Hasford’s writing and strongly recommends for everyone to check it out. All three of Hasford’s books are out of print, but you can find out more about him at a site run by his cousin, http://www.gustavhasford.com.

Thanks for the info. I bet my girlfriend has a copy of both books (I know she used to have _The Short-Timers_), but if not I’ll have to track him down now:
