Sex Offender Registry — Who Cares?

“The records of hundreds of sex offenders living and working in MetroWest are available to the public, but police yesterday said few people ask for the information… residents ask for sex offender data only ’sporadically,’ and usually only once… In the last three years, Corriveau estimated he has had only a ‘couple dozen’ requests for the information, despite regularly posting the data (names, home and work addresses and pictures) on the town’s Web site. ‘You just don’t see a lot (of interest),’ he said. ‘It’s a lot less than I’d prefer.’ Police in other communities have seen a similar lack of interest.” — Neponset Valley Daily News (US)

This is great news for sex offenders. Instead of being marched in manacles through the town square, where righteous citizens can pelt them with rotten eggs, sex offenders today are exposed on the web sites of local police departments across the country. It sounds like a great idea. “Find out if your neighbor is a known pedophile.” But in practice it’s just one of those things nobody uses. Have you ever looked at the local sex offender registry (if one exists in your town)? Have you ever visited your local police department online? No? Well, if not, then that shush you hear is the sigh of relief emitted by the deviant next door… Don’t think twice about it when he offers to babysit — for free. He’s just a nice guy. That’s all.

I don’t care if a sex offender lives in my neighborhood. I am more concerned about a person charged with grand larceny and burglary. And if we are going to be able to see the sex offenders who live among-st us why not know EVERYONE who loves around us that have been charged/convicted of a crime?

You know, it seems useless to me. The registry is a waste of tax payer dollars. What it ultimately does is gives people life sentences for crimes that they have already served time on. People do not look at the registry because research shows that offenders go after people who are familiar to them, people they have known for years. Offenders are not stalking around school grounds, hiding in bushes waiting in ambush. In that case, the registry is useless because the people that we see on them and dont know are really no real threat to us or our children. Finally, with so many sex offender convictions being overturned lately because of DNA or because the “victim” told the truth about their original lie, it is difficult to make a judgment about people based on a crime. They may even become highly successful, caring members of our community if we allow them the opportunity to be people again.

i agree with both comments above! Who cares? Its a waste of tax payers money and the list is 90to 95% WRONG anyway. Forgive and forget and MOVE ON!!!! Besides its the parents resposibilty to watch their children or things like this could not happen and if something does happen too happen we are never 100%protected from any type of crime. Its could happen too anyone. Am i right?

First of all, “something nobody uses”? This is the internet; where Americans waste their working hours entering ridiculous search phrases into Google and other engines. Tie the likelihood of any of a dozen neighbors either skimming the directory from time to time or plugging their new neighbor’s name into Google with the neighborhood gossip network. The pervert will have burning crosses on his lawn within a week I gauruntee you.

Second, while I agree that people should take more personal responsibility for their children, many sex offender lists also contain known rapists. I suppose it’s every woman’s responsibility to live in fear and keep a shotgun by her bed, lest we offend some innocent repeat sex offender by exposing his crimes to the community. Criminals, in my mind, have no rights. If they knew, the moment the even consiered committing their crime, that they would not only face jail time, but a lifetime of fear, humiliation, and public scorn, there would be a lot less criminals out there.

Lastly, I’d like to know where the above user came up with the idea that these lists are 90-95% “WRONG”. What, do the police just populate the database with random names and fictional addresses? “Mr. Jon Doe of 1234 Fake St, Fake City, OZ” If sex offenders’ names were not listed, they’d be in for a lawsuit. If innocent civilians’ names were listed, they’d be in for a lawsuit. While I’m sure both HAVE happened, I sincerely doubt that they are the norm.
