No Eclipse for Sex
“The effects of a lunar eclipse have nothing to do with the desires of couples, explains astrologer Surekha Chadha. Adds psychiatrist Sanjay Chugh, MD, In a country such as India, where eclipses are considered inauspicious, most people are conditioned to believe that sexual encounters will end in disaster. However, this is all in the mind… Also, since sex is not necessarily an everyday phenomenon, most people tend to avoid it if there is an eclipse. But there is no logic to this concept.” — Times of India (India)
It’s easy to laugh at the backwardness of people who believe that cosmological events have libidinal ramifications. If you think about it for a minute, though, you can well imagine why people might develop the belief that “bad things” happen if you have sex during an eclipse.
Where might such a belief come from? Well, if you lived in some time or place that relied on mother nature to provide illumination, a lunar eclipse would mean that the primary source of light in the night sky would be darkened for a few hours. Lovers would be obliged to grope each other in near blackness. For inexperienced lovers, it would be like driving without headlights. You’d risk injury. And for experienced lovers — or for satyriasts, rather — the temptation to rape in dark anonymity would be great. After all, it’s easier to ignore a girl’s pleas to stop doing something to her when you can’t see the fear on her face.
moon light may not each rainy night too. so why eclipse?
