Forty Years for Rapist of Octogenarian

“A Dallas man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Friday for sexually assaulting an 89-year-old woman inside her northeast Dallas apartment. Police arrested Eldridge Sellers IV, 37, after he continued to call the victim after the September 2002 attack. The woman’s children moved her out of the apartment where she had lived alone and began noticing unfamiliar phone numbers after they forwarded her phone to their residence. Police put a recorder on the phone line and the woman’s daughter-in-law pretended to be the victim in telephone conversations, capturing Mr. Sellers apologizing for the attack, as well as describing his sexual fantasies… Prosecutor Matt Arnold described in closing arguments how Mr. Sellers planned the attack for months, gaining the woman’s trust, visiting her and reading Bible scriptures in the weeks before he attacked her.” — Dallas News (US)

In sex it is a truism that one man’s attraction is another’s repulsion — that the hotly desired object of one man’s affection would cause another man to retch. Thus when a guy claims to have the hots for a dog or a cadaver or whatever, you have to just shrug your shoulders and say to yourself, “Different strokes, different folks.”

But then again, even when you know this, it is still hard to fathom how some people acquire the lusts they do. You can dismiss a lot of perverse activity as misguided opportunism — a guy only groped a dog or kissed a cadaver because it happened to be there, because he was a veterinarian or a mortician and he got so used to the things being around that the thought of having sex with them was no longer repugnant, and so forth. But how can you explain to yourself the kind of deviant lust displayed by this gerontophile? He wasn’t a janitor in a nursing home. He was a guy who wanted this 89-year-old lady so badly that he spent months gaining her trust, even reading the Bible to her. (Uh, there are parts of the Bible where old men sleep with young girls, but are there any scenes showing the opposite?)

Maybe you could contradict the prosecutor and say that, far from these Bible readings being preparations for the dirty deed, they were genuine expressions of friendship and sympathy, and that only after a while did the evil thought of rape enter the gerontophile’s mind. This would make the rape an act of opportunism — and yet, given the guy’s behavior after the attack, it is hard to give him this much credit. Grandma couldn’t have been so hot in the sack that she’d transform opportunism into passion. No, the guy was obviously just obsessed with old ladies. The fantasies he discussed on the phone were probably about octogenarian sex objects.

But how does a guy come to find such old ladies sexually attractive? How? Is it an Oedipal thing? Is it about power — or rather, the powerlessness of little old ladies? Teenagers often daydream about “women of experience,” which in their minds translates into thirty-year-old housewives. Is a gerontophile a guy who never satisfied this fantasy, and so the “woman of experience” in his mind just keeps getting older, and older, and older… Or maybe, if the guy finds experience appealing, he reasons to himself that the more experience a woman has, the more appealing she gets? So he conceives a strange passion for a woman whose peak years, according to most standards, were probably before World War II?

How the hell would I know? The guy’s a gerontophile, and that’s that.
