Breasts and Genetic Engineering

“A billboard sporting a naked, genetically engineered woman whose four breasts are being milked is designed to ‘disturb’, its creator says…. Critics say the image is milking emotion and ‘bad taste science fiction’, but Madge [Mothers Against Genetic Engineering] founder Alannah Currie said she designed it to spark debate about genetic engineering and to protest about designer milk. ‘If they want to make designer milk, why not genetically engineer women for milk?’ The billboard was intended to be disturbing, but few people, except perhaps ’stupid white men’, should be offended, she said.” — Stuff.co.nz (New Zealand)

As propaganda, this is where righteousness becomes stupidity. It’s hard to see how anyone observing a four-breasted woman attached to a milker is going to make the connection with “designer milk.” To the contrary, they’ll react more the way they do when they see some freak at the circus sideshow. It won’t be, “My God! Designer milk is bad!” It will be, “Wow! Look at the chick with the four tits!”

Besides, what’s so wrong with designer milk? All this ranting and raving against genetic engineering is so puritan. It’s like being told you can’t dance or play cards. If you can engineer milk to taste better, or if you can engineer milk to deliver prescription drugs — and if you can do all this without any particular cruelty to cows — then why not do it? Chocolate milk is good. Milkshakes are popular. Why not Prozac milk?

The genius behind this whole propaganda campaign claims that, if scientists want to make designer milk, they might as well go the whole nine yards and engineer women with four breasts. This is a particularly specious analogy, in that its two halves are grossly disproportionate. It’s like saying that, if you want to do organ transplants, you should breed some people to be individual organ farms. Obviously that’s ridiculous. The benefit derived from an organ transplant does not mean you have to degrade other living beings to obtain it. So too with designer milk: you don’t have to degrade people to obtain the benefit. Why make such a melodramatic assertion?

Finally, if this makes for stupid propaganda, it also makes for a pretty great image. It’s unlikely the billboard will turn anyone against designer milk, but it may sure make a few “stupid white men” fantasize about women with more breasts than they have hands for. If some renegade scientist decides to engineer women with four breasts, it won’t be for the purposes of milk, that’s for sure.
