It’s a common adage in detective novels that a killer always returns to the scene of the crime. Usually it’s portrayed as though he has a childish fascination with his own crime, a peculiar pride in his homicidal accomplishments. Or perhaps he wants to prolong the thrill of his kill by revisiting his old haunts. In either case, the motive attributed to the murderer is rarely, as in this case, simple lust. It is also a commonplace that killers keep “souvenirs” of their kills. They might hang on to personal possessions that belonged to the deceased — jewelry is the usual souvenir — or they might snap Polaroid pictures of the body. What they don’t normally do is take home blood-soaked clothes to cherish and embrace. In the case of a necrophile in particular, you have to wonder what he did with them.
