This would be an entirely trivial story if you replaced the assailant and possibly the victim too with men — which just goes to show how rare it is for women to be convicted of sexual assault. Sometimes women are accomplices to sex crimes committed by men, sometimes they assault men in sexual ways (castrating them, for example), and sometimes they are convicted of molesting children. But to see one adult woman attack another adult? It’s like discovering a two-headed penny or an albino cow. It’s a rarity verging on freak occurrence.

The funny thing, though, is that if it’s rare in reality, it’s all too common in imagination. Men like to envision two women together, and if one is the aggressor and the other the victim, well, that only adds to the excitement. How else does a story like this even make the headlines? So much porn takes this power imbalance as its conceit — the mistress and the schoolgirl, the dominatrix and the slave, etc — that it’s hard to remember that it’s even a crime, and thus you wonder a bit if the judge in this case weren’t unconsciously conditioned by the prevalance of this exact fantasy. After all, why let the lesbian assailant off with a suspended sentence? If a man had attacked this same lady in the bathroom of a bar, certainly it would not have sufficed to blame the drink. Certainly he would have served some jail time. But since it was a woman — and since women can’t hold their liquor — and since one woman forcing herself on another makes for a fine bit of real-world porn — why incarcerate her? Hell, the world could use a few more aggressive lesbians running around. What man wouldn’t secretly enjoy the thought of his girlfriend/wife/lover being assaulted in a bar by a decent-looking lesbian chick? It’s what men want — why else would it be in so much porn?

The peculiar thing about this case, then, is not just that a woman committed a sexual assault, but that the demands of the justice system ran contrary to the demands of the male libido. And obviously the libido won, since the girl got off.
