This story came from the Associated Press wire and was repeated in any number of newspapers, usually with titles such as “Man Dies After Wife Squeezes Testicles” and “Cambodian Dies After Attack on Testicles.” What’s interesting is that the headlines tend to imply the man died as a result of having his testicles squeezed. Probably it was not that but the scarf tied around his neck, which likely strangled him. In fact you really have to wonder if you could even kill a person just by putting a choke hold on his nut sack. No doubt every man will assure you that yes, you can, but really it doesn’t seem very likely, in spite of the horrific image it conjures up in a man’s imagination.

Therefore the press, with all their objectivity, really should have titled the article “Cambodian Strangles Husband with Scarf.” But then of course no one would have read it, and when no one reads your paper it’s hard to sell advertising, and so on… You know the story. Everyone is cynical about the media. But it does make you wonder how far this kind of sensationalism can go. Imagine that a man with an enormous penis dies of a heart attack. What will the headline be? “Cardiac Arrest for Monster Cock?” Maybe, to spice up the obits if not the headlines, newspapers should always include a paragraph or two about the genitalia of the recently dead.
