“A Chicago man is accused of participating long distance in the sexual abuse of a 5-year-old Molalla girl by coaching her father over the telephone… The victim’s father sent photographs of his daughter to Tripenfeldas via the Internet, court documents say. Tripenfeldas asked the father if ‘he would sexually abuse his daughter while he (Tripenfeldas) listened on the phone.’ He provided the girl’s father with his phone number. The man then called Tripenfeldas, who coached him in the abuse of the girl, who cried and resisted her father’s attack.” — The Oregonian (US)

This is of course an awful story so far as the victim is concerned, but what makes it a particularly bizarre story is the perpetrator — or rather, the fact that the perpetrator required a kind of rape coach in order to commit his nefarious deed. When these things happen, you like to soften their awfulness by imagining that the perpetrator succumbed to a moment of abysmal judgement — that the perpetrator is normally a nice guy, a well-meaning dad who erred as a result of extenuating circumstances or lamentable thoughtlessness. What you don’t want to imagine is a guy so simultaneously depraved and spineless that he goes searching the internet for an incest mentor. It transforms his deed from something thoughtless into something deliberate, calculating, and cowardly — “cowardly” because the perpetrator obviously needed an authority figure to encourage and approve what he must really have known was wrong.

That being said, psychologists who study deviant behavior recognize that there are indeed a repertoire of techniques that abusers tend to utilize (such as, to name just one example, the tendency to indoctrinate the victim with child pornography in order to condition her to accept being abused). And where there are techniques on the one hand and novices on the other, it seems inevitable that “coaches” will arise to impart the one to the other. You can almost imagine a rape coach, clipboard in his hand and a stop watch hanging from a black shoelace around his neck, drilling the future champions of sex crime in dark alleyways and deserted parks. “How can you hope to become a winner when it took you seven whole seconds to remove that girl’s panties? Ted Bundy could do that in three seconds flat. They were cotton, for Chrissakes!” So the coach buys cheap panties at Target and puts them on a dog so you can practice ripping them off a squirming body…

But if this image seems absurd or even insensitive, it would do well to remember that these coaches already exist — on the internet, where evidently you can find such information if only you look hard enough.
