Pedophilia on the Brain
“Though charming and intelligent, the 40-year-old man couldn’t stop leering at female nurses. He had been in trouble with the law for sexual advances toward his stepdaughter, and now he was talking about raping his landlady… In 2000, the man began collecting sex magazines and visiting pornographic Web sites, focusing much of his attention on images of children and adolescents. Eventually he couldn’t stop himself, telling doctors ‘the pleasure principle overrode’ everything else. When he started making subtle advances on his young stepdaughter, his wife called police… The day before he was to be sentenced to prison, the man walked into the emergency room with a headache. He was distraught, Swerdlow said, and was contemplating suicide. He also was ‘totally unable to control his impulses,’ Burns said. ‘He’d proposition nurses.’ An MRI revealed the tumor, and it was cut out days later. The man’s behavior began to improve. Swerdlow said the judge allowed him to complete a Sexaholics Anonymous program. The man eventually moved back home with his wife and stepdaughter.” — USA Today (USA)
Presuming that the man’s improvement in behavior was really due to the removal of the tumor and not to the impending prison sentence he narrowly averted, it immediately raises a difficult question: could a brain tumor induce pedophiliac feelings in an otherwise “normal” individual? Or did the tumor merely release pedophiliac desires that were already there but formerly held in check? Doctors studying the case incline toward the latter view. They believe that tumors can effectively disable the frontal lobes that are in charge of “executive functions” such as controlling your sexual desires, and in this way those normally repressed desires are allowed free reign. And “free reign” is not too modest a way to describe it, since the man’s affliction sounds less like pedophilia proper than paraphilia or even satyriasis, an unrestrained sexual desire for anything female: nurses, landladies, step-daughters, anyone he came in contact with.
Moreover, if it is true that suppressing the frontal lobes can release otherwise restrained desires, it raises the possibility you really could invent a truth serum of sorts — either a chemical that targeted the frontal lobes, or an artificial tumor strategically positioned to strangle the front brain. You could learn a lot about people this way — and probably everything you’d learn would be bad, since the desires people typically repress are not usually virtuous or nice.
I disagree with the assumption that our restrained desires are “not usually virtuous or nice “. The desires that normal, healthy people typically repress are, in most cases, normal, natural desires that people HAVE to repress to conform to some sort of religious, moral facade of their society, ultimately to avoid being ostracised, imprisoned, or worse.
if female nurses (most nurses in hospitals are female)are allowed to tend to young boys and no one thinks its odd, why is such a big beak made if male nurses sttend on young female patients?
Having said that, i think home environment is best for fathers to explain and teach daughters practical sex. Better than leaving them to be exploited by strangers. Young girls from the age of 9 or 10 are very interested in sex, and can easily be trapped by strangers. Once she knows she can have the same fun at home, she is less likely to search for it outside
