Johns TV
In a sting operation where prostitutes are actually cops, the alleged customers are shocked… The men who were arrested had no idea the penalty could be something never seen before on Detroit television, their faces… A monthly cable show called Johns TV now displays the names and faces of men who are convicted of soliciting prostitutes in the city. Authorities in Detroit say 60% of the men they arrest are from suburbs, they’re married, and have good jobs. It’s the shame game. One woman who says she is a prostitute says neither jail time nor disease has stopped her business. But county prosecutors say they hope Johns TV will make the difference.” — WINK (US)
This sounds like one of those well-meaning ideas that can’t really work in the long run. In the first place, how many wives will really tune in to Johns TV to watch for their husbands? How many countless hours can you spend watching a procession of horny faces before boredom kicks in? After all, the odds of your husband getting arrested — even if he’s cavorting with every crack whore in town — are extremely slim, and thus the odds of seeing him on Johns TV are even slimmer. In the second place, as viewership and therefore the shame factor dwindles, Johns TV will inevitably be hijacked for other purposes. People will solicit prostitutes just to get on TV. You’ll see it on acting resumes: soap opera, cat food commercial, Johns TV. Or maybe johns would start using their access to mass media in order to promote their cause. They’d form a political action group and disseminate john propaganda on their own state-funded tv show. Far from dampening prostitution, it would end up promoting john-ism.
Just my two cents but…
I believe that it is a good thing that street prostitution is illegal, not many people want strung out junky whores lingering about on their lawns at all hours of the night, getting smacked up by pimps and other cracked-out prostitutes. Finding needles, knives, used condoms and all other manner of weird shit on your car, lawn, roof or street is just plain disgustipating.
BUT…
I do entirely support the idea and application of Nevada-style brothels, they’re zoned, taxed, the sex workers are checked for diseases at least every month, pay taxes (on top of what the establishment pays mind you), and aren’t being abused day in and day out by strangers and pimps.
So long as there are no brothels working within the letter of the law, there will always be someone desperate enough to sling their ass on a street corner or near a back alley.
Incall and outcall services are usually professional, and safe(ish), I don’t have any problems with that, especially since it’s not dangling out around on the street, where people happen to be going about their own busisiness without the added worry of bumping into some coked up whore or her equally coked up john, or her supremely coked up and pissed off pimp, who happens to think you’re the guy/gal that owes him all the money you happen to have on you at the moment, plus a few stabs to the face.
That being said… The TV idea is idiotic, I could care less if I was on that all the time, hell, give me a job hosting JohnTV, I’ll pick up some girls and we’ll give those lucky viewers something to really watch. ;D
Thanks for that intelligent analysis, sixgunsamurai. Since you mention the whole issue of legalization, PervScan is preparing a post for next week explaining its position on the topic. Check back soon!
