When you first read this story, you can’t help but marvel at the extremes involved. It’s one thing to find an eight-year-old attractive, another to find an eighty-five-year-old attractive. But to be excited by both? To go from one perversion to its apparent opposite? From pedophilia to gerontophilia? It’s like a temporal equivalent of bisexuality: instead of lusting after both men and women, it’s a matter of lusting after young and old. It’s like being a switch-hitter in time rather than in gender.

But on reflection, you realize that perhaps the extremes end up touching. The differences are not so glaring as they might at first seem. Old people become babies again. They need to be cared for and fed. They wear adult diapers. Senility becomes a kind of innocence regained. Thus it happens that octogenarians become alluring targets for pedophiles — and maybe the reverse happens sometimes too. Maybe gerontophiles go for children mature beyond their years.
