Sexual Exorcism
“Malaysian police have arrested a local witch doctor for allegedly ordering his patient to have sex with him in order for her to be released from an evil spell… The 43-year old traditional medicine man was suspected to have told the patient, who was suffering from chest pains, that she was under a spell, before bringing her to a private room for her to undress. The shaman then began molesting her as part of ‘cleansing rituals’ and ended his session by ordering her to have sex with him in order to ensure she would be safe from future spells… After the sessions, the 24-year old woman said the witch doctor showed her three small stones and some thorns which he said were removed from her private parts, and which he claimed were causing her the chest pains.” — News24 (South Africa)
It seems terribly wrong to arrest a witch doctor for molesting his patient. If you live in a society that admits the possibility that supernatural powers may cause natural ailments, then you can’t deny the possibility that these same supernatural powers may require the shaman to utilize sexual means to exorcise them. In other words, you admit that there are supernatural powers; you admit that the witch doctor is the man to cope with them; how then can you second-guess him just because you think the cure he prescribes is self-serving? How can you, who admit your ignorance by going to an expert in the first place, suddenly claim to know how or how not to deal with powers that you admit are beyond your understanding? If the witch doctor tells you that supernatural powers are exorcised by intercourse, you pretty much have to believe him. After all, you don’t want to sleep with him. Maybe they don’t want to sleep with him either. Probably that is exactly how the witch doctor chases them out of you — by repulsing them with his ugly old sexual advances.
And if you don’t like that, get some Western medicine already. (Although that’s no guarantee you won’t get molested. There was a story a while back about a lady who woke up in an ambulance to find the attendant feeling her up. But at least if such a thing happens in a country not given to superstition, you can legitimately proclaim you were wronged. There are standards of conduct not regulated by the mysterious whims of supernatural beings.)
