It seems only natural that, as the sex lives of politicians are exposed to the public (à la Bill and Monica), the political ambitions of sex workers should become more acceptable to voters. In 1987 the porn star Cicciolina (aka Ilona Staller) was elected to the Italian Parliament and continued to act in hardcore films for another two years. Not only was Cicciolina’s election a stunning testament to how mores have changed since the 1960s, it also provided a glimpse of a future when “sexual politics” might not mean academic debates about gender but rather diplomatic solutions through fucking. In 1990 Cicciolina offered to sleep with Saddam Hussein to avert a war, and then renewed the offer last year on the eve of Gulf War II. Why Hussein didn’t accept her offer is a mystery, since sleeping with Cicciolina must surely be preferable to getting a spanking from the U.S. military. (Unless of course Saddam is not, as is often said, a sadist, but is rather a masochist who uses politics as a means of obtaining sexual gratification.)

At any rate, Cicciolina was a woman ahead of her time, a true innovator in the attempt to solve world problems with sexual propositions. In Norway, the young Ms. Fure — if she is a “former” stripper and porn model at nineteen, how old was she when she started? — can hopefully draw inspiration from Cicciolina’s example. Rather than turn away from her promiscuous past, perhaps she can utilize it in creative ways. She can replace old-fashioned political maneuvers with come-ons and peep shows. What’s a filibuster compared to a fine bust?
