Field Guide for Novice Hookers
“An Australian sex workers’ support group has had its government funding cut after publishing a field manual for novice prostitutes. The manual contains information for prostitutes on how to keep clients, telling them to ‘always act like you enjoy it,’ and ‘try a strip or a new position in bed…’ The manual, published by support group Phoenix, also advised prostitutes to start work early so their clients would not see them without make-up, wearing plain clothes… The group claimed that the manual was to help novice sex workers maintain a regular client base, negotiate safe-sex services and set boundaries, such as mandatory condom use.” — Ananova (UK)
It is difficult to explain how a manual giving prostitutes business advice can create a stir in a land where a brothel just joined the stock market. The West Australian health minister complained that the manual glamorized prostitution, but perhaps the real criticism should be that it underestimates prostitutes’ intelligence. After all, the advice proffered doesn’t amount to much more than that old business truism, the customer always comes first. Presumably even novice hookers would know enough to make themselves attractive and to make the customer feel important. A more helpful manual might have given budding sex workers the kind of advice that could lead them to the stock market too. How do you build a prostitution empire? How do you become a cathouse magnate, a brothel baron, a madame with a monopoly?
